Client Quilt Preparation:

1) Please do not baste or pin your quilt. Please check to see that it does not contain any sharp objects.

2) The prepared backing should extend a minimum of 4 inches beyond each side of your quilt top. (8" longer and 8" wider than the quilt top) Baby quilts will be all right with 6" by 6" excess.

3) For your backing, trim selvages from any seams and press to one side. Then press the entire backing.

4) Press your quilt top, make sure that all seams are pressed flat on the back and facing the desired direction. (This is very important because quilts require stitch in the ditch for stabilization.)

5) Trim any loose threads so they don't become "varicose veins".

6) If your border is pieced to the edge of the quilt top, please stitch 1/8" from the edge to keep the seams from popping open.

7) Any fusible applique should be securely topstitched. (Yes, some manufacturers say that when their appliques are ironed, they are secure--don't believe it.)

8) Please do not put any embellishments on prior to quilting. (examples: beads, crystals, buttons, bows and fishing lures!)

9) All quilts are routinely trimmed even with the top after the quilting is completed. If you do not wish your quilt trimmed or want to have it trimmed to 1/4", please note that under special instructions on your quilt detail form that you send with your quilt.

10) Wrinkles and fullness pieced into a quilt top will not "quilt-out". I will try very hard to avoid tucking fullness or a wrinkle so that your quilt will be as flat as your piecing will allow. If you want to disguise fullness, a 100% polyester batting works the best.

11) Choose a good quality fabric with a busy pattern for your backing. Make sure it is in the same range of colors as your top so the thread will match.

Batik or sheets are not a good choice for a backing. The fabric in these is woven so tightly that the needle can't separate the fibers and will break them instead. You will end up with little fuzzies around each stitch.

Batik on the top is fine because the fuzzies are burried in the batting to hold them secure from fraying.
